Uribe Slims Down

Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times is reporting that Juan Uribe has shown up to camp in better shape than he was in last season.

Apparently Uribe lost weight and "his arms and shoulders looked as if they gained definition." This is good news, as Uribe's weight seemed to be a contributing factor in his poor play last year. Uribe took some of the ugliest swings in Dodger history, and he was just painful to watch at the plate. If dropping weight helps to  improve his swing mechanics in any way then it will be great for the Dodgers.

The article also states that Uribe "wanted to avoid a repeat of his disastrous 2011 season." Moreover, Mattingly says that he wants Uribe to exclusively play third base this season. Locking Uribe into one position should help him to focus his skills on that one position, and give him more time to focus on improving his swing this season. Hopefully, solidifying his position will also have a positive impact on the stats that Uribe will put up this year.

Ethier Reports to Camp

Matt Guerrier is Trying too Hard

Dodgers.com is reporting that Matt Guerrier tried too hard last year, to prove to the Dodgers his worth to the Dodgers.

Last winter, Guerrier signed a ludicrous three year $12 million deal to be a middle reliever. It was ludicrous because the production of middle relievers, from year to year,  is highly unpredictable. Guerrier proved that in spades as he posted a largely mediocre season, in comparison to the numbers he showed he was capable of when he played for the Twins.

Guerrier claims that the large contract was not his issue last year, but it was more likely the fact that he wanted to prove he could pitch in any situation. If Guerrier can settle down a bit, let the anxieties of his huge contract go to the back of his mind, and just focus on being the player that he is capable of being, then he should be a solid member of the Dodgers bullpen.
